What counts, and who to call
WorkSafe WA splits notifications by how urgent the incident is. A death or a dangerous incident that is currently life-threatening is reported by phone, 24 hours a day. A dangerous incident that is not life-threatening is lodged through an online notification. WA also has separate reporting for mines, and for petroleum and geothermal operations. Those add an online notification on top of the phone call.
How WA differs from the model law
Western Australia splits notifications by urgency. A death or a life-threatening dangerous incident is reported by phone on 1800 678 198. A dangerous incident that is not currently life-threatening is lodged online as a Notification of dangerous incident. Mines and petroleum or geothermal operations have additional online reporting on top of the phone call. Incidents involving dangerous goods have a separate report within 21 days. On site preservation, an inspector can issue a non-disturbance notice that holds a site for up to 7 days.
A worked example
A trench wall collapses at a Joondalup subdivision. The worker is dug out and isn’t seriously hurt, but the collapse put people at serious risk. That makes it a dangerous incident that isn’t currently life-threatening. The supervisor stops work, leaves the trench as it is and lodges the online notification. An inspector later issues a non-disturbance notice, which sets how long the area stays closed.
How Haznote handles it
For a WA site, Haznote names WorkSafe WA on the flag. The manager confirms the classification and records whether the phone call or the online route was used. The PDF keeps the occurred and received times side by side.
