Notifiable incidents in Tasmania: WorkSafe Tasmania
Short answer
In Tasmania, a business phones WorkSafe Tasmania on 1300 366 322 straight after a notifiable incident. After hours the call diverts to an on-call officer. If the regulator asks, a written follow-up is due within 48 hours through the online form. The incident needs to come out of the business’s work.

What counts, and who to call
WorkSafe Tasmania names three kinds of notifiable incident: a death, a serious injury or illness, and a dangerous incident. Certain infections and occupational zoonoses, such as Q fever, are in too. It’s unusually direct about what isn’t notifiable. Happening at or near a workplace isn’t enough. The incident needs to come out of the conduct of the business.
How Tas differs from the model law
Tasmania applies the harmonised definition, and WorkSafe Tasmania is explicit about scope. An incident needs to arise out of the conduct of the business or undertaking, so it isn’t notifiable just because it happens at or near a workplace. Its examples of what falls outside include a heart attack unrelated to work and an amateur athlete injured playing for a local team. Another is a person hurt driving to work when driving isn’t part of the job. The written follow-up works as in other harmonised states: on request, within 48 hours, through a single online form that replaced the earlier PDF.
A worked example
A worker at a Launceston joinery shop is splashed with a solvent and has medical treatment within 48 hours. The owner phones the regulator at once and is told it will follow up. A day later WorkSafe asks for the notice in writing, and the owner fills in the online form inside the 48 hours. Another worker has a seizure at the bench the same week, with nothing to do with the work. That one isn’t notifiable.
How Haznote handles it
For a Tasmanian site, Haznote names WorkSafe Tasmania on the flag, and the manager confirms. Because the regulator may ask for written notice, the report’s timestamps and original words are on hand when the form is filled in.
